The disappearance of Thrain meant a new heir was named. "So Thorin Oakenshield became the Heir of Durin, but an heir without hope" (p. 328, Unfinished Tales). For a while he remained in Eriador building up wealth as he could along with his people. Ever were their thoughts on Erebor and it's Great Hall and the lost Arkenstone. Thorin had been too young to fight Smaug when he assailed Erebor. "The embers in the heart of Thorin grew hot again, as he brooded on the wrongs of his House and of the vengeance upon the Dragon that was bequeathed to him" (p. 328, Unfinished Tales). But his people were too few and the alliances between the Dwarves disbanded after the War with the Orcs and Thorin's anger grew as he perceived his situation to be without hope.
