Folcwine aids Túrin: the Oath of Eorl revisited

During the days of Steward Túrin II, Gondor began to be harassed by Orcs from Mordor and the Haradrim to the South. This latter enemy proved the stronger and more perilous. In light of this Túrin took action. "It was Túrin that built secret refuges for his soldiers in Ithilien, of which Henneth Annûn was the longest guarded and manned" (p. 335, The Return of the King). Finally the assault on Ithilien took place led by the Haradrim armed with great strength.

At that time Folcwine was the 14th King of Rohan and his country had regained much of its old strength. "When, therefore, he heard that the Haradrim were assailing Gondor with great strength, he sent many men to the help of the Steward" (p. 350, The Return of the King). "When Ithilien was invaded in great strength, King Folcwine of Rohan fulfilled the Oath of Eorl and repaid his debt for the aid brought by Beregond, sending many many to Gondor" (p. 335, The Return of the King).

King Folcwine wished to lead the Rohirrim himself but was convinced to let his sons go instead. With the aid of Rohan the Haradrim were defeated by Túrin. However, Folcwine's twin sons, Folcred and Fastred died side by side in the battle. A mound was raised in the custom of the Rohirrim. "Túrin II of Gondor sent to Folcwine a rich weregild of gold" (p. 350, The Return of the King). Folcwine later died in 2903 Third Age.
